In a heartfelt Reddit post, the student explained how they were drawn to the promise of working with machine learning and solving complex real-world problems. But as they explored job listings and spoke to professionals, the reality seemed very different. Most “Data Scientist” roles, they noticed, were actually more like advanced data analysts, with tasks revolving around dashboards, metrics, and A/B testing — far from the hands-on machine learning work they had imagined.
What’s worse, the actual ML jobs often go to Machine Learning Engineers, who are usually experienced software developers. “I don’t see many roles focused on ML unless you’re already a software engineer,” they wrote. “And that’s not something I’m passionate about.”
Their post caught the attention of many experienced professionals. One user bluntly replied, “The days of data scientists doing only research and applying ML modules are over. You need to be strong in software engineering now.”
Another added, “The hype around data science has burst. Companies now want results — models that can go into production, not just ideas on paper.”
